Letters from Weslee's Warriors

Hi, folks.  Remember that news story local Channel 9 did on Weslee?  ( http://www.9news.com/rss/story.aspx?storyid=334516 ).  Just in time, it brought Weslee letters, get well cards and postcards, drawings and even a couple of gifts! Having me open the mail while he was in the hospital having his brain surgeries helped to lift his spirits a little bit.  (Heavy pain killers, pain and confusion ruled his life for about 2 weeks.)

Now he is struggling to find a new normal... With difficulties speaking, very little memory, huge vision problems and major side effects to the many meds that he is on..., well, we need your help again.

He is so depressed. Side effect of the meds (we hope).

Please send him letters again, telling him not to give up. Remember, he can't really read anymore, so write/type big.

Weslee is doing ok

On June 9 2013 with Grandma Helen, him,
and Daddy Doug.

It's been 3 1/2 weeks since his first brain surgery and almost 2 1/2 since his second, and I'm happy to announce that Weslee's head is a LOT less swollen! Just has a bit more to go.

He keeps picking at the incision tho so I've been sending him to bed with his wolf-hat on. Wish it wasn't one of his autism traits, but ... just gotta make do.

Walking? Much better.

Talking? A little better. Still has some problems getting words out of his mouth.

Vision?  Same. Tunnel.

Smile? Left side isn't turning up at all.

Pain?  Managed.

Shaking? Yes, that just started today.

Sleeping? Nope. Hasn't had a good night of sleep since he left the hospital.

Eating? Some. Still, he's lost a lot of weight. I need to weigh him. None of his clothes from before fit.

Filter? Nope. Most of the filter we all have is reduced on him. He doesn't always think before he speaks, so sometimes when he corrects your grammar and tells you to say "excuse me" after burping, just play along please.

Seizures? Nope. Not since the hospital. Of course, he's on heavy seizure meds for another few weeks, then hopefully they'll start to reduce them to see if the operation was a success.

Please keep him in your thoughts.

Weslee is not doing great

Weslee's not doing well.  It's been 5 days since his first surgery, where the implanted electrodes into and onto his brain.

He's still bleeding from that one spot on his incision.  He's barely drinking (even tho I keep trying to tempt him) and doesn't really want to eat.  This morning breakfast was a bite of bacon, a bite of eggs scrambled with cheese, a bite of chocolate chip pancake, and two sips of vanilla goat yogurt Hubby brought the other day.

Lots of pain = lots of pain meds = lots of sleeping = no seizures. If he doesn't have any today or tomorrow, they may postpone the next surgery for possibly a week, depending on surgeon's schedule.

He's only had one visitor (no offense, but Hubby, doctors, nurses, and aids don't count).

It's getting depressing, being alone in this hosp room with my very-in-pain child, nurses and doctors galore, answering the same questions over and over, me fighting migraines and intense knee pain, and trying to find a way to keep my son awake plus find a way to get him to seize.

The pain in his eyes is horrible. And I can't help him.

He's getting a washing from the nurse right now. That's waking him up just a tad. Once she's done, I'll start reading some more letters from Weslee's Warriors to him. And maybe the nurse will get someone in here to help me keep him awake and get him to talk about movies, kinda use his brain. Maybe that'll cause a seizure.

Weslee update 2 days after 1st surgery

Weslee is sleeping at this moment but its all as was expected. Except for a little problem during surgery, he's ok. Lots of pain. Nausea. Lots of swelling including right eye swollen shut and looking like a black eye.

Hoping he's better today so we can start learning sign language and start inducing seizures.

Thanks so much for all the letters. He's loving the notes, pictures, movies and just knowing people from all over care about him. We brought quite a lot to the hospital so we can keep opening them, although he hasn't felt like it since we got her. Maybe today?


Day before Surgery

And now for some pictures.

The first two aren't graphic.

First pic: in the red shirt, it's him clowning around the day before the surgery. Look how beautiful he is.

The second is the morning of the surgery, in his hospital scrubs. Wristbands on.  Head just about to be scrubbed.  Trying to get  comfy in the narrow hosp bed.

When we got to the hosp surgery morning, they weighed him ... had lost a total of 8 pounds in just 2 weeks! Probably has lost more in 2 days following the surgery as he didn't eat at all until last night, and then it was only a few bites of pasta alfredo, 2 carrots and a little bit of orange juice.

I sure hope he eats today.

Please keep the letters coming. It's been a rough 2 days and honestly, he needs something to keep him going. He's strong but hates how much pain he's in.

Now ... if you have a squeamish stomach, don't look any further.

These next two pictures can be upsetting. Oh, and the towel on his head to help him remember to not pick at his head, or scratch. His skull plate wasn't reattached and is in a sterile fridge waiting for next week's surgery. We really really don't want him pushing that area and finding out he's missing bone.

ear.
